Bear Flat

August 13, 1983

Sourgrass “83” didn’t fly! I picked up my sign-up sheet at the “Y” at 7:20 a.m. Saturday and the only name on it was mine. I decided to wait until 8:00 a.m. to see if any unsigned people would show. As 8:00 a.m. approached a group of Eugene Natural History Society people began to assemble, among them Lois Schreiner and Dot Leland. Realizing my plight they asked if I would like to join them, which I did.

I ended up at Bear Flat Bog near Olallie Mtn. I saw for the first time the Insectivorous Sundew and also the elusive Grass of Parnassus. The trail in to Bear Flat has a flower show that rivals my Sourgrass trip. I want to do it again. I will do Sourgrass next year, but on my usual middle of July date where I won’t get so much competition. Bob Holmquist.
