Lamb Butte

July 17, 1983

After talking with people at the McKenzie Ranger District on Saturday and realizing that the trail to Substitute was still snow-covered, I decided to let my party make the choice between Substitute Point or Horsepasture. The decision was made to proceed to Horsepasture via the upper Olallie trail. We hiked up the trail for two hours taking note of the many wildflowers and views, the cloud-capped Cascades, and upon stopping about noon for a snack break donned our rain gear as it began to rain. Henrietta suggested that we might enjoy Lamb Butte as an alternative to Horsepasture since we were only a little-over half way, and it was noon. Again a group decision was made to return to the abandoned trail up Lamb Butte. Henrietta led the way, and by the time we were on top the sun broke out, and we ate our lunch in the sun-shine. The group was so cooperative that we chose to bushwhack straight down the Butte until we intercepted the Horsepasture trail again for our return to the cars. It was the cooperation of the hikers that made being the leader so enjoyable. Thanks to Elaine Barrar, Carol Cunningham, Barbara Fishleder, Sheryl Gregor, K. C. Kraft, Henrietta Richmond, Doris and Merle Traudt, from the leader, Mike Wright.
