South Breitenbush Gorge National Scenic Trail

May 22, 1983

Many Obsidians may not be aware that there are two National Scenic Trails in Oregon in addition to the Pacific Crest Trail. One is the McKenzie River Trail. The Breitenbush Gorge Trail was included in 1980.

The key attraction is the steep-walled gorge—the result of the South Fork Breitenbush River eroding a fault line in a basalt dike. The trail is about 12 miles east of Detroit, just past Breitenbush Hot Springs off road 4685. Twelve hikers enjoyed the sunny day 4.8 mile trip which included some hiking along Roaring Creek beyond the gorge—Ruth Coffman, Maxine Hall, Vi Johnson, Nola Kalez, Elizabeth McMullin, Dave Predeek, Parker Riddle, Karen Seidel, Merle Traudt, Dorothy Turner, Paula Vehrs, and leader Wes Prouty.
