Crater Lake Rim X-C SkiApril 16-18, 1982What can I say? Perfect conditions for a classic Oregon tour, which attracted 4½ skiers (one was 4 months pregnant). Twelve feet of packed snow at the rim, combined with cloudless skies a11 three days. Started west from Rim Village at noon on Friday, paused for telemark practice and photos, and camped past Llao Rock atop a cliff overlooking the Lake. Saturday took us west of Mt. Scott and past Kerr Notch, which kept our attention by requiring us to kick a trail through a crusty avalanche slope. A windy night led to a gaiter hunt after breakfast Sunday, followed by a mostly downhill run back to the ranger station. A memorable and scenic trip. Those skiing the 33 miles were Gary and Sue Doolittle, Romella Taylor and leader Bill McWhorter. |
