Pengra Pass/Midnight Lake
March 13, 1982
What a great, super loop trip this was! That is just what eight of us—Marilyn Block, Dot Leland (leader), Ann Gasparini, Jennifer Gilliam, Gladys Grancorvitz, Wilbur Groner, Velma Shirk and Michelle Tambellini — all unanimously agreed upon as we raised a toast at Timber Jim’s at the end of the day.
Starting out at the Gold Lake Snow Park we took the Abernathy Road into Midnight Lake. Velma led us in on this part of the trail and we had our lunch stop right on the lake. After lunch we followed the Pacific Crest Trail back to the highway. The snow conditions were good; this trail can be difficult if it is icy.
The day was mostly cloudy, but the sun came out long enough for us to enjoy a good view of Odell Lake from Burley Bluff. When we reached the highway, we skied the short distance over to the Willamette Pass ski area. Then we followed the one mile trail down to the Gold Lake road out to the highway and back to the parking lot and the cars, completing the 7 mile loop. This loop could be made going in the opposite direction but the run from the Pass to Gold Lake road is best going down.
Just as we were leaving, a couple to another car told us a purse was stolen from their car and their car doors were locked!
