Castle Rock

December 12, 1982

Our start was a bit disconcerting to the leader as one car containing the majority of hikers left town in the opposite direction we were supposed to go. Hoping the driver knew of another way to get there, we went on to the trailhead, and they soon arrived having discovered the mistake in direction early. One small but swift stream tested our ability to rock and log hop, then on to the top at good speed. An excellent view into the McKenzie River valley was enjoyed along with lunch, and a little exploring of the rock formations otherwise known as “awesome drop-offs”. A rapid descent brought us back to the cars just as the rain began and leaving plenty of time for coffee and pie at you know where. (Vi’s pies)

Joining us while on an extensive tour of the West was Floyd Olson from a Wisconsin hiking club. Obsidians were Wes Prouty, Jerold Williams, Lee Hatch, John Cecil, Vi Johnson & leader Betty Legris.
