Santiam Pass to McKenzie Pass
August 18, 1982
Excellent (hot!) weather conditions and superb views of solid-looking Mount
Washington were enjoyed by this very compatible Wednesday group, hiking
across Washington Wilderness section of the PCNST (Santiam Pass (Big Lake) to
Ex-Obsidian, Princess Virginia Meissner (of Bend) was encountered at the trailhead.
A leisurely lunch break at “the usual spot” fitted in well with the mood
of the hike, and a “lost” horsepacker was observed on the trail.
On the downhill segment, some members of the party took a sidetrip to Little Belknap Crater.
Dedicated car-shuttlers Elaine Groner and Betty Legris gave invaluable
and much-appreciated support — indeed, without their rather involved and
time-consuming 3-car shuffle this hike could not have taken place!
Mid-week “Pass-to-Passers” were Wilbur Groner, Joanne Haines,
Ruth and Wayne Lill, Joe Lowry, Dan Sellard, Suzanne Steussy, June Wallace,
Alan Wicker, and leader John Cecil.
