Carl Lake

August 15, 1982

The day began with overcast skies which cleared by late morning. The trail to Carl Lake climbs 900 feet elevation in five miles with no steep grades. There are a number of smaller lakes along the way with glimpses of Mt. Jefferson through the trees. The blue huckleberries were ripe and they were quite abundant. Carl Lake is at 5500 feet elevation and occupies a deep basin with sandy beaches along the south side and vertical rock walls along the north shore. There were still patches of snow in the shade. Had the weather been hot it would have been a perfect place to go swimming. Hikers were Dick and Elaine Barrar, Karen Houglum, Roger Keady, Deanna Millard, Al & Mike Niems, Clarence & Dorothy Scherer, Ethel Weltman, Robin Steussy, Lois Schreiner and leader Dave Predeek.
