Umpqua River Canoe Trip

July 15, 1982

Left Eugene at 8:15 a.m. with 6 people, 3 canoes, and one trailer with motorcycle towed or carried by a corn-binder 6 pac. We drove I-5 to Sutherlin where we left the freeway on the road to Umpqua. A few miles below Umpqua to a county gravel bar a mile upstream from Mac Brown Park. There is one rapid below the gravel bar and a bigger rapid at the park. We spent the day canoeing this mile and a quarter part of the Umpqua River, loading and unloading canoes and motorcycling back to get the truck. We had a picnic in the park at noon. We drove home the way we came after a stop in Umpqua for ice cream and pop, arriving in Eugene at 5:30 p.m. Canoers were Jonathan and Laura Bates, Henry Davies, Leona Mattson and leaders Bill and Donna Eimstad.
