Eugene to Walterville/ReturnApril 24, 1982To celebrate the first day of Daylight Savings, five cyclists left Eugene at 9:00 a.m. for an intended 45 mile ride. The route took us through Alton Baker Park to Armitage Park for a rest stop, then along the rolling hills of the McKenzie View Drive — beautiful views of the spring-green fields and the river. A change of route on Marcola Road to visit the Prouty-Fontana farm and cabinet shop added some distance to the trip. At the intersection of Camp Creek Road we met Günther Füernsteiner, out for a Sunday ride, who joined us for the rest of the ride. On through Walterville, with a stop for lunch at Elaine’s Cafe, then a return trip via Deerhorn Road and the Springfield-Eugene bike paths. Of course, as all good cyclists do, we made many stops for food and drink. Back to Eugene by 4:30 and surprised to learn that Carolyn’s odometer read 65 miles — making an intended moderate ride into a full metric century. Cyclists were Carolyn Orum, Mary Fulton, Günther Füernsteiner, Bob Devine, Glenn Meares and leader Doris Allen. |
