Old BaldyApril 4, 1982We left the South Eugene Parking lot at 10:10 a.m. (One of the advantages of a local trip is the potential for a later starting time.) Under sodden skies, ten hearty and optimistic souls struck out for Old Baldy in the Coburg Hills. The weather held as we made our way through cows and cow pastures, creeks and rivulets. We paused many times to look down at the valley and the view that was growing more spectacular as we went higher. Lunch in a sheltered spot north of the summit was punctuated by the sound of wind in the trees and some unidentified precipitation—snow? hail? fat rain?? We were treated to a rain squall on the way down . . . not so bad considering the monsoon appearance of the sky over the Willamette Valley. The ten hikers who braved cow and cow pie to be treated to the delights of Old Baldy were Emmy Dale, Mary Fulton, Laurie Gratton, Leslie Knight, Chris Olson, John Powell, Rachell Powell, Ben Ross, Edith Weltman and Mary Ellen de la Pena. |
