February 27-March 1, 1981
The second annual Elk Lake Trip was favored with bright blue skies and sunshine. While the snowpack was slight, the general skiing conditions were good and most folks agreed that a little sunburn is better than sticking skis and fierce winds and blizzard as we experienced last year.
Friday night’s lodging was at the Bend Riverside (pool closes at 10:00 p.m.). Saturday breakfast at the Pine Tavern was leisurely and we were easily at the Dutchman’s Flat trailhead by midmorning. The ten mile trek to Elk Lake is a straight shot down Century Drive and we got to the lake before 3 o’clock. Dinner that night was at the much esteemed Don and Leroy Eatery at the Lodge with Gary from Stevens Point, Wisconsin helping to produce an excellent meal.
On Sunday the Two Nighters took leave to return to Eugene, while the rest of the party headed toward Horse Lake on a ten mile excursion with Glenn Meares in the lead and Bea Fontana as consulting navigator. A potluck that night included the Elk Lake staff, plus two Portland visitors.
Considerable work was required to organize this trip. Credit goes to both Joe Lowry and leader, Jane Hackett. Enthusiasm is already high for the 1982 trip. This barebones, paler-than-life report by ecd (Emmy).
Two Nighters were Doris Allen, Tom Donnelly, Fran Gnose, Julia Natvig, Dave Predeek, Henrietta Richmond, Gene Thaxton, Oliver Thornton, Pat Thornton, and Chris Shuraleff. Three Nighters included Emmy Dale, Bob Devine, Bernie David, Bea Fontana, Wes Prouty, Joe Lowry, Glenn Meares, and Leader Jane Hackett.
