Dutchman Flat to Broken TopFebruary 14-15, 1981Five intrepid winter mountaineers set out from Dutchman Flat to ski in to the base of Broken Top on Saturday, February 14. This trip changed from hour to hour, dictated by the weather. The original destination was Green Lakes, but we settled for camping SE of Broken Top, at the base of Ball Butte. The temperature was comparatively warm, making it difficult to wax, as intermittent cold spots caused skis to alternately glide and stick. The scene was very beautiful with the previous days fresh snow coating the trees and mountains. We hoped to climb on Sunday, but the first light was dimmed by a pall of fog and it didn’t seem likely to lift. We retreated to Dutchman Flat after another beautiful ski of about six miles. Some of the party finished the day by downhill skiing at Bachelor Butte. A memorable trip by Jan Baker, Luke Lundquist, Glenn Meares, Bob Williams and leader Jerold Williams. |
