Santiam Pass to Hortense & Meadow Lakes
February 14, 1981
The day began overcast and rainy.
The State Highway Dept. report said it was above freezing at Santiam Pass.
Two skiers showed up to join me on this 10-mile trip.
We skied from Ray Benson parking area down the road to Big Lake and then
east down the Santiam Wagon Road.
There must have been less than a foot of snow and it was wet and soggy
with puddles of standing water here and there.
We skied past Hortense Lake and north towards Meadow Lake.
The last half mile was without a trail across the burn and around stumps and logs.
Wet snow fell much of the day.
Meadow Lake is rather pretty and it would make a good destination with several
feet of snow on the ground.
In spite of conditions it was fun and we had a good work out.
Skiers were Gene Thaxton, Tom Johnson and leader Dave Predeek.
