Santiam Pass to McKenzie Pass
August 12, 1981
An inordinately long car shuttle was avoided for this Santiam Pass
to McKenzie Pass hike on a very hot Wednesday during the August heatwave,
when four drivers drove and ten hikers hiked.
Starting at Big Lake, great closeup views of Mt. Washington were enjoyed
along the dusty trail.
A really leisurely lunch break was taken at the “usual spot,”
and then on to the lava beds, along past Belknap and Little Belknap Craters
(unfortunately no time to divert), and then the long stumble down to
McKenzie Pass where our chauffeurs were waiting.
A most enjoyable day with a very congenial group.
Lava stumblers were Stephen Emmel, Bob Foster, Ellen Gradison, Wilbur Groner,
Betty Legris, Ruth and Wavne Lill, Una Munson, Toby Steelhammer,
and leader John Cecil.
(Many thanks to our non-hiking drivers Elaine Groner, Paul Cecil,
Janet and Mark Legris who variously scrambled up Hoodoo, lunched in
Sisters, and swam in Scott Lake to pass the time.)
