Kitson Ridge above Oakridge
April 11, 1981
Friday night with lousy weather, three members called to say if raining in the
morning, don’t wait for them!
But they must have had spring fever like myself as they all showed up even in the rain.
Seven members and nonmembers drove to Oakridge with a stop to put on raingear
and warm up at my cabin after which we took the road up Bald Mountain to the
Kitson Ridge trailhead.
The start of the new trail is 3000 ft. and the rain turned to snow as we parked.
The trail climbs slowly to the ridge in about a mile, with several inches of
beautiful snow, by the time we discovered a large Indian-Cave for our coffee break.
We later continued on the old (75 years at least) ridge trail till signs of
maintenance and blazes ended, then back to the cave for lunch.
This is the largest cave I have found in my years of hiking this area and it
really made the day for all of us.
Those on the trip were Lorene Bressler, Peter Cecil, Martha Mitchell,
Fred Schepman, Charlene Wilbur, Margaret Wiese & leader Donn Chase.
