Mt. HoodMay 23-24, 1981We went early to bed Saturday evening at Still Creek campground expecting a clear night and an early start the next morning. Instead it rained steadily and we got a late start. At Timberline it was foggy with a drizzle, but there was no wind and we needed some exercise so at 7:30 a.m. we started up under the Palmer lift. Near the top of the lift we could see the sun trying to shine through the fog, so much encouraged, we continued upwards. By the time the weather settled down to heavy fog with a hard drizzle we were fairly near the Hogsback so pushed on in order to reach some objective before turning back. Refreshed by a rest at the Hogsback we realized that we were too near the summit to quit now so headed up. On top at 2 p.m. it was quite blustery but fairly warm. There was no view. On the descent we had some enjoyable sitting glissades in troughs that had been made by thoughtful parties that had preceded us down the mountain. We arrived back at the parking lot at 4:30. Climbers were Mary Ellen de la Pena, Tom Donnelly, John Mowat, leader, Wes Prouty and Chris Shuraleff. |
