Martin Lake

August 23-24, 1980

This should be classified as a “lake trek”. We walked into Square, Booth, Martin, and Summit Lakes in the North Santiam area, just to the south of Three Fingered Jack. We set up camp at Martin Lake and then went up the ridge to Summit Lake before dinner. I don’t think we could have found it except for the fact that we stumbled onto the climbers trail leading up to the mountain and we just followed that to this lovely lake tucked among the trees. One family was camped at Summit Lake and two ether parties were camping at Martin.

The weather was perfect — not any mosquitoes, plenty of moonlight and stars, gourmet food, and good conversation. We saw four grey jays, one friendly deer, one Stellar Jay, two skinny dippers, one shy chipmunk, four horses which messed up the trail, five dogs, and a partridge in a pear tree!

Emmy led us out with her compass. 0verall, it was a very successful trip. Hikers included Emmy Dale, Karen Houglum, Anne Montgomery and Parker Riddle (leader).
