Bachelor Butte

July 26-27, 1980

The group left Eugene Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. and crossed Santiam Pass on the way to Todd Lake where we camped for the night. The meadows around the lake were lush and green and the water was warm enough to induce some of us to go swimming. The night sky was cloudless with a full moon and there were more than a few mosquitos. Morning was calm and clear and we had a leisurely lakeside breakfast. From the ski lodge parking area we began hiking up the slopes of Bachelor Butte on primitive access reads. Above timberline we hiked across snowfields and jagged volcanic ridges.

The fast hikers reached the summit in less than three hours. Of our party of 11, 10 made it to the top to enjoy the superb view. The summit is fairly flat with an amazing variety of rock plants. Hikers were: Betty Legris, John Cecil, Nanette Petnicci, Hermann Landherr, Anne Montgomery, Lou and Elaine Qualles, Robin and Ethel Steussy, Suzanne Mittenthal and Dave Predeek, leader.
