Tire Mountain

May 18, 1980

Ten hikers left Eugene by car at 8:10 a.m. under sunny skies and with high spirits, meeting two others of our group at the Lowell Ranger Station. No one knew at all that to the north of us Mt. St. Helens was blowing her top.

The 4.5 miles to the top of Tire Mt. from the Carpet Hill Rd. approach is a steady, easy ascent, all of it in timber until the top is reached, where the usual meadow is found. Spring flowers were out, to the enjoyment of the group. After a snooze in the sun at the top, the group was back down the mountain — and heading home.

Those on the hike were: Richard Eden, Audrey Justis, Nancy Hanses, K.C. Kraft, Bonnie Ledford (leader), Helen Lynch, Sandi Mickelson, Elizabeth McMullin, Helen Smith, Dorothy Turner, Paula Vehrs, Edna Whaley.
