McKenzie River Trail, Part 2

April 12, 1980

The hike started as scheduled with promise of at least a rain-free day. It was the best we have ever had on the McKenzie Trail, sun all the way. A small party but a friendly one. Ken Lodewick and Larry Pagter held a reunion during the trip, they last saw each other some 40 years ago when they were neighbors in Portland.

The trail was reasonably dry but not dusty, there were many flowers out, no snow, birds were heard and seen, including two harlequin ducks, roosting on a rock in the middle of the river. Ken and Larry saw a mink at one of the stream crossings, the others being too far behind to get there in time. We were lucky that one hiker joined the group at Leaburg, with a second car, since this trip requires a shuttle.

Trail hikers were Bob Foster, Miki Hutchison, Larry Pagter, Sue Sluys, Robin and leader Ken Lodewick.
