Heceta House Weekend

January 19-20, 1980

The weekend geology field trip was a big, resounding success. Thirty-five Obsidians, led by Ewart Baldwin, enjoyed Saturday morning hiking along Heceta Beach and observing many whales spouting and surfacing on their way south. The group enjoyed lunch in the sun on the shore of a small pond located in the dunes about a mile inland. Ewart explained how the various forces of nature combine to form and re-form the dunes and surrounding geological formations. In the mid-afternoon, the group arrived at Heceta House where the facilities, operated by LCC, were ideal for our party. The trips committee, with assistance from several others prepared and served an excellent home-made spagetti dinner. Special thanks to spagetti sauce maker Helen Hughes who couldn’t attend.

After dinner most people enjoyed the night view from under the Heceta Lighthouse as the eight beams of light circled through aclear star-filled, warm night sky. After a hearty breakfast Sunday morning, the passengers in each vehicle decided where they would go along the coast to enjoy the beauty of the 70°, clear, sunny day before heading home to Eugene.

Those enjoying the weekend were: Ewart Baldwin (leader), Donn Chase, Jean Chase, Emmy Dale, Bob Dark, Pat Dark, Bob Devine, Bill Eimstad, Donna Ferchland, Gladys Grancorvitz, Jane Hackett, Dorothy Hayes, Karen Houglum, Virginia Horton, Flo Kraft, K.
