Crater Lake and Mt. Scott

October 6-7, 1979

Seven members and four non-members left Eugene shortly after noon on Sat. After snacks in Chemult, we proceeded toward the South entrance to Crater Lake Nat’1 Park via Hwys 97, 232, 162. We arrived at Mazama campground about 5 p.m. for car camping. Nine members of the party drove to the rim that night to see the lake in moonlight. Although it was mostly cloudy on Saturday, we awoke to clear skies on Sunday. We visited the visitor center and stayed for the 9:30 a.m. geology lecture. After a leisurely drive around the rim to the trailhead, we started toward the top of Scott at 11:30 a.m. We were on top for lunch about 12:45 (trail 2 miles, elevation gain 1250 ft., summit elevation 8926 ft.)

We departed for home about 3 p.m. via North exit, Diamond Lake Resort for snacks, Steamboat to Cottage Grove and Eugene. The 10 who made it to the top of Scott were: Doris and Ted Allen, Mary Bridgeman, Emmy Dale, Barbara, Roger and Dorothy Hayes, Nancy Means, Wes Prouty (leader), and Merle Traudt. Joella Hadland camped with us and visited the lake, then departed to scout her trip for the next weekend.
