Rock Mesa

July 7-8, 1979

We left Eugene under partly sunny skies and arrived at the trailhead near Devils Lake at 10:30. After about 2 hours had reached the base of LeConte Crater and had an easy hike to the top less packs which we left by the trail. After enjoying the nice views of the Crater, Broken Top, South Sister, and Rock Mesa headed for the Pacific Crest Trail and our campsite at Mesa Creek. Several feet of snow still in the woods but many wildflowers in the meadow by Mesa Creek. After tent raising, eating, and other necessary camping preparations we decided on a hike up the Mesa, which some in the group found was a little more than they were up to and so returned to camp. After the rest of us had gone a little way on the rough and abrasive rock we were sure they had done the right thing and did likewise. After a leisure breakfast and camp undoing we arrived back at the cars at 1:30 and home at 5:00 p.m. Nice weather, nice scenery and nice group of Emmy Dale, Betty Legris, leader Lee Hatch and sons Wayne & Brian.
