Iron Mountain

June 30, 1979

The scouting party for the American Penstemon Society started for Iron Mt. at 8:00 a.m., June 30. To make the party interesting, we included 24 Obsidians & friends. As is usual, the leaders were blessed with light showers and wind, making lunch on top uncomfortable. However, the flowers were at their best and made the day worthwhile. Dave Wagner, assisted by Gwen Moore, discovered that our plant list has a few spelling errors and is out of date due to plant name revisions. Also, Dave found at least one new plant on the mountain which will be included in our list for next year. Dave is Curator, Herbarium, University of Oregon. Gwen Moore is part of the American Penstemon Society leadership team for their northwest meeting which will be on Iron Mt. July 7. Robin and Gwen also bird watched and saw hummingbirds, juncos and others. Weather was foggy to wet and windy. Fog moved aside while we were on top so that we could see the cars down below. Youngest member of the trip, age 1½, had a fine time. Part of the party came back by Fish Lake lavas, Sahalie Falls, Koosah Falls, and Trail Bridge Reservoir checking penstemon sites.

Flower viewers were Carol & Lonnie Bourgerie, Dorothy Conlon, Bob Holmquist, Liz Igl, Bee & Bob Meserole, Anne Montgomery, Flora Moore, Gwen Moore, Oliver Olson, Terry, Darlene & Anne Plaisted, Dave Predeek, Anne Raftree, Helen Robbins, Nancy Ross, Mike, Maureen & Katherine Schmid, Andy & Marie-Ann Thompson, David Wagner, Eleanor Wilkerson, and leaders Robin and Ken Lodewick.
