Boulder Creek

June 30-July 1, 1979

Our backpacking trip to Boulder Creek (Pine Beach) began with all six hikers plus all our gear fitting into one car, (not one of the small compact variety). We took the back roads from Cottage Grove through such places as Culp Creek, Sharps Creek, Clark Creek and Canton Creek to Steamboat on the Umpqua River. We had lunch at trailhead and headed up the 2½ mile trail at 1:20 and arrived at our destination at 3:00 p.m. Our destination was a campsite with a shelter, place for campfire, nearby spring and a breathtaking view of the valley below from the rocky cliffs of Pine Beach. The evening was enjoyed by all cooking over the campfire followed by campfire songs accompanied by Gordon and his harmonica, stories, etc. Sunday morning we woke to misty rain, which didn’t dampen our pancakes or our spirits too much. Some of us took a side trip and explored the Perry Butte Stub trail where we saw many huge sugar pine trees. We left camp at 11:30 a.m. and arrived at trailhead at 1:00 p.m. with half the group taking the Boulder Creek Trail and the other half taking the Bradley Trail. After a futile search for the hot springs we headed home by way of Glide, Wilbur, and then to the Freeway. We arrived in Eugene about 5:00 p.m. The hikers included Gladys Grancorvitz, Gordon Kadar, Kathy Kellog, Paula Vehrs and co-leaders Donna Ferchland and Dorothy Leland. NOTE: Gas stations were open Saturday & Sunday at Steamboat and at Dry Creek.
