Silver Creek Falls State Park
April 22, 1979
Obsidians from Eugene met the leader, who had come from Portland, at the parking lot near the South Falls Picnic Area at 10:30 as scheduled. After fee collecting, leaving some cars there, we pooled riders and drove to the North Falls parking lot and were on the trail going down hill to the North Falls by 11:00. There were 19 of us at the count off. We hiked south pretty much at our own speeds. This was all right; on such a well traveled trail in the narrow canyon one could not get lost. For several it was the first time at this special part of Oregon and passing behind falls, as we do at least 4 of the 9, a new experience.
Many wild flowers were in bloom, however, May will have more. This often used to be the Mother’s Day trip.
About noon we met the Trails Club party of 11 which had started from the South Falls about an hour earlier than our start. Incidentally, the leader’s ride from Portland was with them. There were many other hikers—several with children and/or dogs. We took the side trips to Winter and Double Falls. Most of us stopped at the end of the bridge to Winter Falls for our trail snack. Most had climbed up the stairs from the South Falls by 2 o’clock. Weatherwise it was always on the edge of rain but it didn’t spill.
We were glad to be in one of the large log cabins on the park grounds for our potluck picnic. Another party there already had a fire going in the fireplace for their wiener roast. Our food was yummy. At this time of the year there seems to be no stoves or electric plate to warm up hot dishes or boil coffee and tea water, but our bringings went together without that. The picnic ending was reminiscent of other Obsidian Silver Creek Falls trips.
Trails Clubbers tell me that hikers have better views of falls approached going up stream, but I had chosen to take advantage of the down hill track. The stairways at South are a little less arduous than the climb from the canyon at North.
Falls hikers were Nancy Campbell, Helen Cummings, Emmy Dale, Bob Devine, Donna Ferchland, Bob Foster, Sunny Halagean, Victoria Hallock, Lily Hostiche, Judith MacInnis, Ross Redekin, Ethel & Robin Steussy, Merle Traudt, Paula Vehrs, Kathy and Christopher Wallin, Edel Revesz and leader Catherine Dunlop.
Many thanks to Emmy Dale, Rear Guard—that more responsible task.
