Bailey trailhead by Diamond Lake by 8:00 p.m. All the campsites near Diamond Lake were full. Up at 6:00 a.m. and a quick breakfast at the Cafe, and on our way to Thielsen at 7:00. Got to the snow after about one mile, but had bare rock on the West ridge. All were on the summit by 11:30. Great glissade almost to timberline, and back at cars at 2:30 were Dan Bates, Mark & David Lewinsohn, Dan & Bill McWhorter, Mike Northrop, Ron Whisler, Dan McLaughlin, leader Lee & Wayne Hatch. David & Mark headed home for Eugene, and the rest of us to Mt. McLoughlin. Set up camp by the Cascade Canal and fought the mosquitoes till giving up at 9:00 p.m. On the trail at 6:00 a.m. and the summit at 10:30. Snow most of the way including a couple of feet on the top. Weather warm and windless all weekend with shirt sleeve weather on both summits. Home at 7:00 p.m. with the eight who climbed Mt. McLoughlin. |
