Crater LakeApril 8-9, 1978At the risk of sounding boastful, I will say that this was one of our better ski trips. Good weather and a congenial group made this a pleasant and “laid back” outing. Fine weather and easy terrain made it possible for the group to disperse and make side trips as they pleased, once camp had been set up near The Watchman. Saturday night was cold and clear. Three in the group—Bert, Sam, and Sue—took advantage of the good conditions for some night skiing, staying out until midnight. Sunday morning, most in the group climbed The Watchman, others toured down to Hillman Point. Snow conditions were about what one would expect for a warm spring weekend; icy early in the morning, good from nine until eleven a.m., then somewhat slushy for the balance of the day. Everyone was back at the lodge by 1:00 for a leisurely social hour before the long drive home. Skiers were Norm Benton, Joan & Steve Chipman, Ted Eugenis, Bert Ewing, Beatrice Fontana, Sam Miller, Glenn Meares, Wes Prouty, Suzanne Van Wolput, and leader Jack Nitzel. |
