Pengra Pass to Odell Lake

February 12, 1978

We left 19th & Patterson at 8:05 a.m. in a downpour which turned to wet snow by the time we reached Oakridge and into a blizzard as we reached Pengra Pass Road. But as soon as we started down the road, we were sheltered from the wind, and it was quite pleasant with excellent snow for skiing. At the junction we turned east down the old Pengra Pass Road over washouts and what have you down to Odell Lake Road. Around to Trapper Creek Campground for a cold but fun lunch, with Dorothy leading the singing which helped to stave off hypothermia.

We returned the same way, meeting our two snowshoers (refugees from a rained-out coast hike) along the way. At the junction we broke into small groups some practicing on a hill on the Skyline Trail, some playing in the open space there, and at least two skiing up the trail toward Midnight Lake (Wes, where are you?).

Arrived back at cars about 3:30 in time to see tow trucks hauling cars away to Crescent Lake Junction for parking in the road (not our cars, thankfully). Most of us met again for coffee in Oakridge, then came on home. It was a good day with a great bunch of enthusiastic skiers! There were 17 of us: Mary Borman, Larry, Jeff and Zotty Cash, Bert Ewing, Donna Ferchland, Dorothy Leland, Wes Prouty, Kevin and Parker Riddle, Charlene Simpson, Dick Storm, Cathy Stroh, Merle Traudt, leader Henrietta Richmond, and our two happy snowshoers, Clarence Landes and Ted Stern.
