Odell ButteFebruary 11, 1978Clear skies greeted our threesome of Ted Dearborn, Velma Shirk and leader Sam Miller. We skied the six miles up Odell Butte in three hours and took less than 1½ hours to return to the car. Snowmobiles had decimated the first three miles of the trail, however, the last three miles consisted of virgin snow 4–6 inches deep. During lunch we were treated to splendid views of the Sisters, Diamond Peak and Mt. Theilsen. The downhill trip was super. Velma decided to ski on one ski when she launched one of her skis half way down a switchback. X-country skis are reasonably controllable in powder, but not on snowmobile made moguls, (A.K.A. ruts.) It was a neat day with the skiing being the best I’ve had in the last two years. |
