Pacific Crest Trail North of Santiam Pass

January 14, 1978

At the Pacific Crest Trailhead met three from Corvallis, making the ski group total 18. Left on the trail at 10:30 under a cloudy-windy sky and temperature hovering at freezing. The snow surface was in a thaw/freeze condition—not the best, and five in the party decided not to try the trail after a short time. The balance of the group progressed to the Duffy Lake trail junction for a snack. Then on up the trail for perhaps another mile, before stopping for lunch and deciding to return to lower, better protected elevations as the weather was deteriorating and the snow was very crusty. A short detour was made on the Duffy Lake trail for some open slope skiing on the way down. Those making the trip were Norm Barnes, David, Larry & Zotty Cash, Walt Finchum, Robert Glasson, Pat Norton, Dot Leland, Wes Prouty, Merle Traudt, Steve Uban, Randy Zustiak and leader Glenn Meares. Those changing their minds were Jack Ewing, Joella Hadland, Dorothy and Roger Hayes, and Barbara Whittlesey.
