Boulder Creek

June 24-25, 1978

We expected to see a bear again this year, and did, though it was on the way home this time and not in camp. Skies were mostly overcast with a little drizzle toward evening and though we’d have welcomed sunshine, the cool weather made for pleasant hiking.

The trail begins at the North Umpqua River & without warning climbs abruptly up the side of the mountain. Car-weary legs complain but tend to be forgotten in the beauty of the trail as it winds through moss covered rocks, rhododendron, sugar pine, and out on to Pine Bench itself with its stately stand of ponderosa in a meadow of grass and wild flowers. We camped at the shelter where there is water and plenty of open space for tents and an unlimited number of people.

This trip should go down in the annals of Obsidian history for the volume and excellence of pre-marital advice proffered to Chris and Lois in anticipation of their approaching wedding July 1. May their marriage prosper in spite of it! Also worth mentioning were the evening serenade around the campfire, blueberry pancake breakfast and a side trip down to Boulder Creek, a mile and a half past the shelter, a beautiful spot and worth considering for a future overnight hike. Campers were Shirley Driver, Chris Dungey, Donna Ferchland, Dot Leland, Lois Mattson, Lois Schreiner, Marc Thayer, Paula Vehrs and leader Leona Mattson.
