Iron Mountain

June 24, 1978

The expedition started out under cloudy skies, which showered lightly on the cars as they went to the trailhead. It continued to shower off and on during the ascent, with a brief sunny period near the top. Then during lunch it sent down small ice particles. The descent was made in part showers, part sun, with sun holding out for most of the later short stops. The flowers were at an in-between stage, early ones done, later ones just started. Trip included an experienced botanist (Herm Fitz) who is doing a book on the plants of the McKenzie Valley, two amateurs (Ken & Robin and a horticulturalist (Ken Hixson). On the way back we stopped at the McKenzie River falls and at Fish Lake lava beds for the most delicious part of the trip, a feast on wild strawberries. Flower searchers were Carol & Lonnie Bourgerie, Bobbie & Sandy Downing, Deanne Dufresne, Barbara Durchanek, Rita Eberle, Herm & Robin Fitz, Bob Foster, Margaret Gonmus, Ken Hixson, Karen Houglum, Bonnie Ledford, Vern Nelson, Andy Thompson, Maradel Gale and leaders Ken & Robin Lodewick.
