Shot Gun Creek Park Hiking TrailApril 23, 1978Since the scheduled trip up the Fall Creek above Salt Creek Falls was undoubtedly under snow, the Shot Gun Creek Trail was substituted and the time set for 1:00 p.m. on Sunday. Five Obsidians and seven nonmember guests drove along McKenzie View Drive and Hill Road through Marcola and parked at the new Shot Gun Creek Recreation Area developed last year by the BLM at a cost of $1,500,000 plus. Following a short briefing on the history of the park and the facilities offered by the caretaker, Gary Fadness, we hiked through the beautiful picnic and play area to start on the loop trail. It took us past many tall moss covered stumps left by the logging of 60 years ago. Rushing streams, fern banks with early blooming wild flowers made the trip a delightful afternoon stroll. We were back at the Eugene High Parking lot by 5:00 p.m. Along on this Sunday afternoon hike were Mary Benedict with her children Joan & Larry, Andy & Marie-Anne Thompson, Ellen Jackson, Scott Mayfield, Edythe Pearson, Sue Riemer, Merle Traudt and leaders Clarence & Dorothy Scherer. |
