Pacific Crest Trail/Big LakeJanuary 23, 1977This ski trip was originally scheduled for a Foley Ridge Road tour, but lack of snow moved us higher to the Hoodoo/Big Lake area, where the snow was also showing signs of disappearing, in fact, the ski bowl was closed. Our tour basically followed the Pacific Crest Trail from near its junction with Hiway 20 about one mile to the burn; then over twigs, logs, and around rocks to various roads in the burn to Big Lake for lunch, complete with picnic tables. The day was sunshiny and cold, with the temperature ranging from -5° to -2° C. The snow was crusty and hardpack, skimpy in spots, but still provided good skiing and runs. Ten skiers and one hiker (Paula Vehrs) made this trip. Enjoying the skiing-hiking, camaraderie, and sunshine together were: Dorothy Leland, Rachel Major, Jan Middleswart, Wes Prouty, Tom Rhodes, Henrietta Richmond, Merle Traudt, Paula Vehrs, and Greg Wannier. Glenn Meares and Parker Riddle were co-leaders. |
