Duffy Lake—North SantiamJuly 9, 1977A few hundred yards along the trail we were greeted by two scolding Ospreys perched high near their nest. Wildflowers were in profusion. This trail stretched out to 12 miles instead of the anticipated 8, but was quite level and not too difficult to negotiate. We all reached Duffy Lake under grey skies by 12:30. A cool breeze was blowing and a chill was in the air. It became quite evident that to climb the Butte we would need a lot more time and that we would have to make an overnighter out of this venture. After a long, enjoyable lunch and a bit of fishing by Ted we left Duffy Lake at 2:00 and were out to our cars at 4:00 p.m. Connie and Millard Thomas also were enjoying the area on the Maxwell Butte trail. I would especially like to thank Helen Smith and Ted Stern for acting as assistant leaders. Hikers were Emeline Dale, Karen Houglum, David Predeek, Amy Rich, Margaret Seeley, Helen Smith, Ted Stern, Andy Thompson, Phyllis Trowbridge, Dorothy Turner, Paula Vehrs, Robert Walden, Pat Widney, Marion Wylie, and leader Parker Riddle. |
