Mt. HoodJune 4-5, 1977This climb was scheduled as a grandmother climb, so we took it slow and easy by not starting till 6:45 from Timberline Lodge. After a little over an hour we had made it to the Silcox Hut where one of party decided to stay for the day. By 12:30 we had reached the hogsback where we rested, ate, roped up & put on crampons. We were on the summit, where we encountered our first wind for the day at 2 p.m. The sky was cloudless and we were able to see the mountains from Rainier to Diamond Peak. After a short stay on the summit we headed for the lodge & all were there by 5:30. Of the twelve in this group who reached the summit there were nine who had never climbed any mountain before, and three who have climbed Hood a total of 19 times. Climbers were: Jacco Brotheran, Greg Brown, Zotty, Larry, Jeff and David Cash, Bob Fletcher, Wayne Hatch, Lee Hatch (leader), Bernd Ludwig, Jan Middleswart, Velma Shirk, Gene Thaxton and Ran Whisler. I want to thank all on this trip for making my job so easy. I enjoyed the day from start to finish. (Lee Hatch) |
