Cone PeakFebruary 7, 1976This trip was scheduled as a ski tour, but became a hike due to the lack of snow. Under ordinary snow conditions, this tour is actually moderate ski mountaineering. The Cone Peak, Echo Mountain, Iron Mountain group is uniformly steep. However, the trees are sparse, and there is much open terrain and high alpine meadow. This area has been proposed by the Willamette National Forest Land Use Study for Wilderness status, and it richly deserves the protection this would give. We didn’t even attempt to ski. Instead, we left the slats in the car and hiked in the hot sun to the summit of Cone Peak, then to South Peak, returning early to the car for a leisurely trip home. Making this trip were, Beth Ruskai, Jim Anderson, and Jack Nitzel, leader. |
