Bear Mt.

October 17, 1976

We left town at 8:00 a.m. and after driving through Dexter and up the Old Giustina Mill Road, we parked and started our hike on a sunny and warm day up the unfamiliar, abandoned logging roads on what we thought was the way to Bear Mt. After about an hour and a half we could see our destination, and the leader started for it going cross country and assuming the group was going on up the road. This was only the first mistake of a badly fouled up trip. The leader soon reached the top of the hill and expected the rest of the group to soon be up the road to the site of the old lookout. The problem being that the group had not continued up the road. It wasn’t the road up the hill anyway. They waited for over an hour for the leader to return and lead them up the hill, then decided to return to the cars. Leader and group were reunited with the help of a Giustina Bros. employee, and all returned to the cars and home. The unlead hikers were Elaine Barnes, Beverly Juilfs, Marilyn Morris, Ruth Romoser, Dorothy and Clarence Scherer, Velma Shirk, Helen Smith, Bob Walden, and Marion Wylie. Leader was Lee Hatch.
