Diamond Lake to Windigo Pass

September 24-26, 1976

The party of four arrived at the trailhead, at the new PCNST parking area, off highway 138, Thursday evening to cover that portion of trail which was left off our August tour due to rain.

On Friday we walked eight miles. Following crisp and clear views of Crater Lake rim, Mount Bailey, Diamond Lake, Lemolo Lake, and four sides of Mount Thielsen, we camped on Thielsen Creek N.E. of the mountain. That evening we explored the geological features of the east face of Mount Thielsen.

The ten mile Saturday trek took us past Howlock Mtn., Tipsoo Pk., and over some new trail to Maidu Lake which is the head of the Umpqua river. After another good camp, with stargazing around the campfire, we made the ten mile Sunday jaunt to Windigo Pass. Merle informed us of some history of mining on Cappy Mtn. and traces of a wagon train in the valley below, as we viewed the area from our high trail. As we approached the pass we all agreed that we couldn’t have picked a better time for this fascinating 28 mile trip. Mary Bridgeman, Glenn Meares, Wes Prouty (leader), and Merle Traudt.
