Echo MountainJanuary 27, 1974Echo Mountain was reached by driving up the McKenzie and Clear Lake highways to the So. Santiam Highway, then west a few miles to Lost Prairie Campground where we parked and began the trip. Most of the trip involved Echo Creek Road and then Echo Creek to a lovely basin at the east base of Echo Mountain. The weather was not in our favor on this trip. Most of the day snow fell hard and wet, with the temperature remaining above freezing. The first ¼ mile was through an area torn up by a logging operation, then through a clear cut to Echo Creek Road. The rugged terrain at the start discouraged half the party, who turned back and spent the day touring on easier terrain south of Lost Prairie. Meanwhile the other half of the group, the Tigers, continued up the road for two miles and then ½ mile cross country paralleling Echo Creek in to the basin. The leader, Jack Nitzel, can be faulted for underestimating the difficulty of parts of the route. The deep, wet snow was another factor that contributed to the difficulty. On trip: Chuck Berkey, Dave Dornbush, Dorothy & Roger Hayes, Mike & Velma Shirk, Greg Wannier, Linda Zook and the leader, Jack Nitzel. |
