Rockpile & Marie LakesAugust 17, 1974After 12 signups, people finally arrived to take trip. Newspaper mixup confused several would-be tripers. Transportation crisis averted after one driver called in sick at 6:30 a.m. when Wesley Prouty took extra passengers in his canopied pick-up. Group hiked to Rockpile Lake via Crater Butte Trail and met mild attack by mosquitos. Sighted motor bike tracks inside Diamond Peak Wilderness area. Also noted Forest Service mileage markers were inconsistent. Arrived at Marie Lake for lunch at base of Diamond Peak, fortuitous breeze blew mosquitos away. One hiker took brief swim. On return trip the group decided to make a loop return by way of Ruth Lake. This route provided panorama view of near top of Devils Rockpile of the Summit Lake, Crescent and Odell Lakes, Odell Butte, Mt. Thielsen, Mt. Bailey and Crater Lake rim area. Roundtrip on this new trip is ten miles. With Charlotte Mills, leader, were: Dorothy Hayes, Linda Kristensen, Wes Prouty, Paul Seeman, Karen Seidel, Merle Traudt and Bruce Utsey. |
