Wallowa Lake

September 13-15, 1973

A happy group traveled by a special Trailways bus to Wallowa Mountains. They left at 7:30 a.m. and took a route via McKenzie Highway to Clear lake and on to Redmond with a coffee and homemade pie stop at Brand restaurant opened especi-ally for the bus. Lunch was at the Painted Hills State Park, an interesting geological phenomenon. On to Mt. Vernon, Ukiah and La Grande and on to Wallowa Lake about 7:00 p.m. The Lodge was occupied by Obsidians only. After dinner the Lodge Manager assembled all of us for a talk and plans for the free day Friday.

Friday, however, it rained so the group did not get to ride the tram because low clouds obscured the mountains. A trip was made to the house of author Glenn Vernam to see his museum and a stop in Enterprise for lunch and shopping. We returned to Wallowa Lake and took a short hike to the Falls. As it began raining, making for a hasty retreat, the Lodge Manager gathered us in the lobby and showed slides of the area. In the evening, after dinner, movies were shown of the Eastern Oregon country. Saturday was clear and we left Wallowa Lake at 8 a.m., taking a route via Pendleton and the Columbia River arriving home at 6:15 p.m. A congenial and good driver and a good group of people made an excellent trip. This group consisted of: Muriel Aufderheide, Clay Barnes, Julia Barnhill, Alice Bissel, Bessie & Keith Brunig, Duchess Cox, Ina Foss, Mae Hishon, Martha Huffman, Elizabeth Jungers, Karen Loretz, Willa Lucy, Phyllis Martz, Ruth Nichols, Bertha Richardson, Louise Risley, Mrs. Rutherford, Margaret Silliman, Dow & Flora & Grace Smith, Edna Temple, Burt & Mrs Williams, Bus Driver and Ray Cavagnaro, leader.
