REMINISCENCE - By Ray Sims
We Obsidians extend our deepest sympathy to Edna Temple in the sad loss of Roy, as another of our good friends has gone.
It was Dr. John Baascom who asked me how Roy became a cook, along with his many other accomplishments. Roy was with the crew who built the "Skyline Trail" thru the length of Oregon during which time he did the cooking. This was in 1920.
In 1950 at the wonderful summer camp in the Tetons, Edna and Roy did the cooking for the 50 campers and I am sure many will remember how the "stragglers" at the table were served hotcakes filled with tin lids and/or string.

HISTORY OF THE OBSIDIANS
No. 65 Ray Sims
Camp Carlson continued on into the second week in August of 1954, but I left to meet the Sierra Club at Devils Garden at the beginning o€ the second week.
The Obsidian Board had instructed me to write a letter to the Sierra Club to welcome them to our Green Lakes area as.... that would be their first camp in the Northwest.
I met them at Devils Garden at that evening's campfire. The late Judge Robert W. Sawyer of Bend was the speaker for the evening, reporting that the Wilderness bill was favored in Congress. He had just returned from Washington D. C.
The next day was used to go into Green Lakes to make camp. Their cooking and eating areas are much different than Obsidians. With 92 people in camp it is difficult for them to build a table as we do, so they stand, sit on a rock or just sit on the ground.
At the second night's campfire they had "Ray Sims Night" and I presented Oliver Kerlin with an Obsidian arrow point (found at Obsidian Camp in 1928) and after I had talked to the group of 92 for half an hour, Mr. Kerlin gave me a "polished silver cup"to hang on my belt. (This is a Sierra Club cup.)
The next day I began the four-day "high" trip as leader, with ten Sierra Club members and Al Schmitz, a Mazama of Portland.
