HOODOO SKI BOWL

The Willamette National Forest’s newest ski area was visited Sunday, January 15th, by Assistant Supervisor Roy Elliott, his son Roy Jr., Louis Waldorf, Obsidian President, Bill McCracken, Dorr Hamlin, Glen Sims and Arthur Hendershott. The group spent Saturday night at the Detroit Ranger State as guests of Ranger Boyd Rasmussen, who with Mrs. Rasmussen, accompanied them to the ski bowl.

Hoodoo is 147 miles from Eugene and three-quarters of a mile from the Santiam Highway. It is located near Hogg Pass Butte at an elevation of 5000 feet, having many slopes suitable for the beginner as well as the expert. A fresh fall of powder snow Saturday night made ski conditions ideal, but snow falling intermittently through the day somewhat hampered the meet between the Bend Skyliners and twelve members of the Cascade Ski Club of Portland. The majority of the 250 people skiing were members of the newly formed Takenas Club of Albany, among who was Russell Harrison a former Obsidian.

Let’s arrange a trip to Hoodoo, meeting the members of the Albany Club, some week-end after our Winter Outing.

port them to be very good. Two more reels are expected about the middle of February and will shown then.

The new members and Junior members are especially invited to come and get acquainted with the club members. There will be a small charge of 10c for the party.

ANOTHER CHIEF CALLED CHIEF TLKOPE

Carl Young, Our Carl, as he was always known to all Obsidians, has been called from this Life to Life Eternal. No one will be missed by the Obsidians more than Carl. He was always foremost in all our activities, always working to make things more pleasant and comfortable for those around him, always mindful of a duty and more than willing to do it.

He was a great student of the forests, the mountains, streams, and lakes; a lover of nature. Always imparting his knowledge of the same to all those about him. To know him was to love him.

On the trails, in our Summer Camps on our trips, none seemed quite complete without him. All Obsidians admired Carl. We will meet, but we will miss him and we think we hear him calling “Weep not Obsidians for me, for I am waiting in Glory for thee”.

PRINCESS LIGHTFOOT

Another great shock to all her many friends and her Obsidian comrades, was the sudden fatal accident to Elizabeth McMahan, one of the first three Obsidian princeses.

“Betty” was the wit of any group, at socials or around the campfire, and on the trails, she kept the leader moving. Her place cannot be taken as she was loved by all and her Obsidian friends will miss her greatly.

RIPLEY REFUSES

Robert L. Ripley sends it back. Chief Sky Hook—went to the hospital — in early December — BUT — on his return home — he presents his wife — with a week old BABY GIRL.

In Switzerland they call skis “Shees,” because they are so hard to manage. — Washington Alpine Club.

JUNIOR OBSIDIANS TO MT. HOOD
Marjorie Schnellbacher

Nine Junior Obsidians and two Obsidians were among those who took advantage of the Christmas vacation to take a trip to Mt. Hood, December 27-30th.

The skiing conditions were poor the first three days because of rain, but the weather cleared the fourth day.

The group went to Timberline Lodge by car in the mornings and skied back to Mazama Lodge after spending the day skiing at Timberline. The evenings were spent in playing games and Schottisching.

The group included Ruth Virginia Bond, Margaret DeCou, Polly and Florence Gordon, Leslie Brockelbank, Jean McMorran, Fanny and Ruby Jackson, Phoebe Smith, Marjorie Schnellbacher and Elizabeth Gullion.

This was one of the first trips taken by the Junior Obsidians and all those who went wish to thank Elizabeth Gullion who made the arrangements for the trip and was largely responsible for its success.
