April 16: to Gokyo

On April 16 we crossed the toe of the Gokyo glacier and went to the village of Gokyo, at 15,700 ft. Gokyo is nestled between the glacier moraine and a fair-sized lake. This was a short day, and we reached Gokyo before lunch. We each chose to spend the afternoon in different ways; John and I wandered up the valley toward Cho Oyu and took in views of the receding glacier from the top of the moraine. Others hiked, read, walked around the lake, or just took it easy.
